How much do we spend on groceries?

I get asked this question a lot "how much do you spend on groceries?" Or "how much should my family spend on groceries?"

I feel like there are a lot of factors that might potentially impact a person's grocery budget. This might be geographical location, the cost of living, income, the number of people living in your home, dietary restrictions and what types of stores you have access to.

But this is the rule of thumb we go by at our house: $100 per person per month. I don't use coupons, I don't shop at Aldi (because there isn't one in the entire state where I live) and I don't have really any other options besides Publix and Walmart.

To break this down, it's basically $25 per person per week. (Minus baby Jesse. He is only 1 and really just eats off our plates. And requires extra bananas but I've yet to break the budget.)

We do have a. separate budgeted amount for eating out, but we often don't use it all other than a $10 pizza on weekends and the occasional ice cream cone.

According to the USDA my family isn't spending enough on groceries. According to their latest statistics, a family of four on a "thrifty plan" should spend about $557.00 per month on food.

So what does this include?

Any and all groceries, cleaning products and toiletries I need. This does not include diapers. Those we order from Amazon and we have a separate budget for that. (That's around $30 a month for diapers.)

We also buy our meat quarterly from Zaycon or from a local farmer and that cost is included in our grocery budget.

What do you typically buy in a week?

In a week I usually buy 2-3 gallons of milk, several packages of fresh berries, a bag of apples, oranges, about 6 pounds of bananas, coffee creamer, broccoli, carrots and other fresh vegetables, cheese, yogurt, bread and peanut butter.

Do you cook everything from scratch?

Yup. Nearly 100% of everything. I do buy bread from the store.

Do you clip coupons?

Not usually. I've started using Walmart grocery pick up and they don't accept coupons.

I'd love to know how much you spend on groceries, leave me a comment below and tell me.
