How to reduce food waste and my #1 grocery saving tip

Are you getting sticker shock at the grocery store? I know. I feel the stress of constant rising prices and the stress of wondering when will it all calm down.

Today I wanted to share with you my number one tip when it comes to buying groceries for my family of 6.

My number one tip for saving money on groceries is mind-numbingly simple. Ready?

Buy foods you are actually going to eat.

I know. Was that even worth typing? But here is the thing. We all fall into this trap, we go to the store with a limited budget and we buy cheap foods or super healthy foods we never tried before and then end up wasting them because it’s not our food preference.

The most expensive food you buy is the food you throw away.

You don’t magically become a different person inside Kroger. If it doesn’t really appeal to you there it’s not going to appeal to you on a Thursday night when you’re tired. Buy foods you like.

Of course, we want to eat healthily and make good decisions, but how healthy is the Kale or bagged salad you let spoil in the fridge?

So let’s talk about some ways to reduce food waste.

One thing that really helped me was prepping my produce. When I get home from picking up groceries I will go ahead and wash and chop carrots, and strawberries and pull grapes off the vine. Then I store them in glass Pyrex containers or mason jars.

Pro tip: put your sliced carrots in water to prevent them from drying out.

If I have vegetables that are starting to get “floppy” I will make a plan to go ahead and use them or blanch and freeze them for a stir fry or soup in the future.

If my fruit and berries are starting to get soft I will throw them in a bag in the freezer to make jam.

I know none of this is mind-blowing. But these simple steps have helped us curb our grocery spending and stop wasting fresh produce.
